WOMEN'S DIVISION 1 NORTH

The Phoenix travelled up to the sunny climbs of Kingston upon Hull and like last year were short benched. With Katie Higgins recovering from medical treatment, Rosie Adey on crutches and 5 other regular stalwarts unavailable this was going to be an interesting game. On arrival we noticed a few of the players for Hull who also play for their Premier team arriving in their GB tracksuits and to say there was a look of trepidation from some would be an understatement. However the team remained up beat and if there is one thing the Phoenix do well its laughing in the face of adversity. We all knew what we lacked in skill would be made up for in grit and determination. The first period saw a spirited start with shots from both sides, however the goal judge behind the Hull game must have been watching something else as the count was woeful. At the other end Tam Donoghue was, as always superb, heavy shot counts mean nothing to her and it wasn’t until the last 2 mins of the period the breakthrough came.. Period 2 saw the Hull side up the pace and their Premier players going in search of  goals, whilst the Phoenix NM watched 2 go past her she once again was up to most challenges. The third period was goalless and although the Phoenix lost 3-0, the ‘car crash’ some had been concerned about became little more than a ‘car park scrape’ and the team left the ice smiling and proud of their performance. GOG ‘Girl of the Game’ went to rooky Laura Mason who had a super performance which promises great things for the future. However it should be noted everyone played well with other notable performances from Nicky Blower filling in, in D and Jenny Adams and Sarah Powell clearing the zone and chasing people down. we could single out elements of everyone’s game, but its enough to say WELL DONE TEAM!

As the season fast approach’s its almost time for training to begin, after a few short weeks break it starts all over again.
